CNA Continuing Education

Continuing Education (CE) is a valuable and necessary component of CNA/NAC training. Successfully completing at least twelve hours of continuing education units (CEUs) annually is required by federal law to be recertified as a nursing assistant. In Washington State, the Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) requires that a Nursing Assistant Certified (NAC) completes and reports their twelve hours of NAC/CNA training by their birthdate annually after the second year.

Northwest NAC Training offers three popular continuing education CNA classes for the purpose of maintaining certification and increasing skills for specific employment requirements; 7 Hour HIV/AIDS Certification Course, Nurse Delegation Core Training, and Nurse Delegation Focus on Diabetes.

Nurse Delegation Core Training

Nursing assistants are limited in the tasks they may perform for patient care. In Washington, a nursing assistant that has successfully completed the Nurse Delegation Core Training course, passed the exam, and received an accredited certificate from DSHS may work with a Registered Nurse Delegator. The RN Delegator will oversee the care of the individual client, however, they may assign specific nursing tasks to a nursing assistant with this certification in order to improve the care of the client. Additional tasks a CNA with Nurse Delegation certification can perform under the direction of an RN Delegator include administering prescription medications and glucose testing.

Having certification in Nurse Delegation will increase the employment opportunities of a CNA. Some employers may even require a CNA to have Nurse Delegation certification, particularly in long-term community based care or an in-home care setting.

How do you get certified with NW NAC Training? Students take materials home to study over a two week time frame. When the student is ready, they make an appointment and come to our training center to test their understanding of the material. We are an accredited testing facility with Washington State, and will administer the Nurse Delegation Core exam. As with our other continuing education courses, if a student fails the initial test, they may study the materials for one additional week and take an alternate exam. Failing the second exam will require the student to reapply to take the course. Successfully passing the exam will earn the student a DSHS certificate.

Nurse Delegation Core Training is a nine hour self-study course, and can be used as part of the required twelve hours of continuing education per year.  A CNA must receive certification for Nurse Delegation Core Training prior to applying to take the Nurse Delegation Focus on Diabetes course. Nurse Delegation Focus on Diabetes

When a student successfully completes the core training exam, they may apply to take the Nurse Delegation Focus on Diabetes course. This course is required if a CNA is going to administer insulin injections under the direction of a Registered Nurse Delegator. The self-study course materials explore diabetes, insulin, and insulin injections in-depth. The course is designed to prepare the nursing assistant to identify critical safety concepts, learn how to work with the nurse delegate on this aspect of the client's care, and much more. The materials are a valuable resource for the CNA throughout the course and as they work with clients in the future.

As with the other continuing education courses, the student will contact NW NAC Training to set an appointment for the course exam. NW NAC Training in Vancouver, WA is an official certified Washington testing location. Passing the exam will earn the student DSHS certification allowing the student to work with a registered nurse delegator to care for clients with diabetes.
